5 Reasons for the Great Indian Failure at the World Cup Semi Final against Australia

Team India had a dream run in the ICC World Cup 2015, as they came to the Semi-Finals undefeated, beating biggies like Pakistan, West Indies and South Africa. But, the defending champions lost their semifinal match against four-time champions Australia.

Though it was a brave fight, in reality it was a Heartbreaker, from the Men in Blue in front of a screaming Sydney Cricket Ground. What were the mistakes that made Team India lose this prestigious game against Australia?

India half lost the match when they lost the toss:
Australian skipper Michael Clarke won the toss and opted to bat first. It was very crucial for India to have batted first against a stronger team like Australia. After winning the toss, the four-time champions rattled up 328 for 7 by riding on in-form batsman Steve Smith’s classy century at the packed SCG.

Australia Were the Favorites:
India has beaten Australia just once in 35 years in a one-day international at the Sydney Cricket Ground and the host has won all six semi-finals it has contested since the inaugural event in 1975. So, Australia were the favourites and had a very good fan support at their home ground.

Defensive Attitude:
From the beginning team India seemed to be on a defensive mode against Australia. The bowlers were looking to restrict Australia rather than making them all out. Not a single batsman apart from Dhawan showed the spirit to fire or attack at the Australians. All were mostly wasting deliveries, may be due to their excellent bowling.

Failure to capitalise on good starts:
Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma got India’s chase off to a solid start, putting on 76. However, the batting line-up failed to capitalise on it in the face of some disciplined bowling by the Aussies. Virat Kohli, who is usually excellent in big-run chases, was dismissed for 1, while Ajinkya Rahane (44 off 68 balls) got bogged down in the middle overs.

Unable to Handle Pressure:
The other semi-final match played between South Africa and New Zealand was more or less similar to this match. In that match, Mc Cullum fired early and took the game away from South Africa. They showed the fearless spirit to win at any cost, that spirit was missing from the Indians. Pressure of chasing may be an issue for this. We need to train our players to cope with any situation or pressure.
